Programmable Police Scanners, Pre-Loaded for Your ZIP Code

Programmable Police Scanners, Pre-Loaded for Your ZIP Code

Every radio we ship is programmed and tested before it leaves — your county's sheriff, city police and fire/EMS channels, already in the radio when it arrives.

The part nobody sells you: the channels

A programmable police scanner is a radio that only hears what is programmed into it. Out of the box that is nothing. Most buyers find that out the hard way — the radio arrives, they scroll through 128 empty channels, and it goes in a drawer. Programming it yourself means looking up your county's frequencies, converting them to the right format, setting the tones, and uploading a file with a cable and software.

We do that step for you. You enter a ZIP code when you order, we load that area's law enforcement, fire and EMS dispatch channels into the radio, test that it receives, and ship it. No cable, no software, no programming file.

How it works

1. You pick a radio
Choose a model below and give us your ZIP code at checkout.
2. We look up your area
We pull the current channels for your county from the RadioReference database and check what is still in the clear.
3. We program and test it
Channels, tones and labels go in, then we key it up and confirm it receives before packing.
4. It arrives listening
Charge the battery, turn it on, and you are hearing dispatch — free US shipping.

What we load into the 128 channels

Channel group What it is Who uses it
County sheriff dispatch The primary county law channel Sheriff patrol, county-wide calls
City and town police Municipal PD dispatch for the towns near you Local police, traffic stops
Fire and EMS dispatch Fireground and medical response Fire departments, ambulance
NOAA weather Seven nationwide weather channels Storms, watches, warnings
Statewide and mutual aid The channels agencies share in a large incident Multi-agency response
National common channels Aircraft, marine and railroad where they reach your area Airband, marine, rail

We program the channels that are still receivable in the clear on an analog radio. If your county's law dispatch has moved to encryption or a digital system, we tell you before you buy rather than after — see the honest section below.

The honest part: what programming cannot fix

Programming solves the setup problem, not the encryption problem. Two things worth knowing before you spend anything:

  • Encrypted dispatch is unreachable. If a county encrypts its law channels, no consumer scanner at any price hears them. Fire, EMS and many surrounding counties usually stay open.
  • P25 digital systems need a digital radio. Our Baofeng radios are analog VHF/UHF. If your county runs a P25 or trunked system, an analog radio will go quiet, and we will tell you that instead of selling you one.

Check your ZIP code first — it is free. Enter your ZIP on our coverage check page and you will see whether your local police are analog, digital or encrypted, before you buy anything. Run the free ZIP check →

Who programs police scanners near me?

This is the question that stops most people, and the honest answer in 2026 is: almost nobody. Local radio shops have closed, the chains do not program consumer radios, and a ham operator who will do it for free is a lucky accident. Programming is the step that decides whether the radio is useful, so we made it part of the product instead of a service you have to hunt for. When you buy from us the radio arrives programmed — you never need a shop, a cable or a software download.

If you already own a scanner and want to do it yourself, our guide walks through finding your local frequencies step by step: how to find local police scanner frequencies.

Programming questions

Do I need to program the scanner myself?

No. Every police scanner we ship is programmed to the ZIP code you give us at checkout, and tested to confirm it receives before it is packed. Your county's sheriff, city police, fire and EMS dispatch channels, NOAA weather and statewide mutual aid are already in the radio.

How much does programming cost?

Nothing extra. Programming and testing are included in the price of the radio, which is $59.50 to $116.50 depending on the model. There is no separate programming fee and no subscription.

Can you program a scanner I already own?

We do not take mail-in radios, so we will not claim otherwise. If you bought your scanner elsewhere, our beginners guide and handbook cover programming it yourself, and you can ask us for your county's channel list.

Do you program digital or trunked systems?

Our radios are analog VHF/UHF, so they cannot follow a P25 or trunked system. We check your county before shipping: if dispatch runs on P25, we tell you and point you at a digital scanner instead of sending a radio that will go quiet.

How long does it take to ship?

Radios are programmed to order and normally leave within one business day. U.S. shipping is free, and the radio arrives with the battery charged enough to switch on and listen.

Is listening to police radio legal?

Listening to unencrypted public safety radio is legal in the United States. Using what you hear to commit a crime, or listening while committing one, is not. See are police scanners legal for the state-by-state detail.
