Which one is right for you?
Before you order, let us check your area
Most US counties still run analog on at least some public safety channels. A growing number have moved to encrypted or digital P25 systems that no analog scanner can receive — at any price.
Send us your zip code and we'll tell you honestly what's receivable where you live. We'd rather turn down a sale than ship you a radio that can't hear your county.

Who Buys A Police Scanner?
Neighbors who want to know why there are sirens two streets over. Parents who want a heads up when something happens near the school. Storm watchers tracking weather and emergency response in real time. Preppers and campers who want communication that works when the cell network doesn't. Hobbyists who just find the airwaves fascinating.
You don't need a license, a technical background, or any radio experience. If you can turn on a flashlight, you can use one of these.
Police Scanner Questions, Answered
What is a pre-programmed police scanner?
A pre-programmed police scanner is a handheld radio receiver that already has your area's public safety frequencies loaded into memory before it arrives. A standard scanner ships blank and requires a computer, a programming cable, and software like CHIRP to become useful. Ours arrive ready to scan your local police, fire, EMS, and weather channels the moment you power them on.
Is it legal to own a police scanner?
Yes. Owning and listening to a police scanner is legal in almost every US state, because these are unencrypted public airwaves. A small number of states restrict scanner use inside a moving vehicle or while committing another crime. Check your state's specific rules before mobile use. This is general information, not legal advice.
What can I actually hear on a police scanner?
In most areas you can hear local police dispatch, fire department calls, EMS and ambulance traffic, NOAA weather alerts, public works, and amateur radio repeaters. Coverage varies by county. Some agencies have moved to encrypted or digital P25 systems that analog scanners cannot receive. See our Listening Options guide for details on your area.
Do I need a license to use a police scanner?
No license is required to listen. Listening to unencrypted public safety traffic requires no FCC license or registration. Transmitting on amateur radio bands does require a license, but simply scanning and listening does not.
How do I know if my area is analog or encrypted?
Most US counties still run analog on at least some public safety channels, but a growing number have moved to digital or encrypted systems. Before you order, message us with your zip code and we'll tell you honestly what's receivable in your area. We would rather turn away a sale than ship you a radio that can't hear your county.
How long does programming and shipping take?
We program each radio individually to your zip code after your order comes in, then ship free within the United States. If you need it programmed to a location other than your shipping address, just leave a note at checkout.
