Is IMPD encrypted?
No. IMPD district dispatch is unencrypted and heavily listened to. Tactical, covert and special operations channels are encrypted, which is standard — routine patrol dispatch is open.
What kind of scanner do I need?
A digital P25 scanner. Marion County runs P25 Phase I, so you don’t need the most expensive Phase II model — a mid-range digital unit does the job here, which keeps the price down.
Do I have to program it myself?
No. We program it for your exact Indianapolis address before it ships.
I’m in Carmel, Fishers or Greenwood — will it work?
Hamilton County (Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville) is receivable. Johnson County has encrypted, so we won’t promise Greenwood police. Give us your address and we’ll tell you exactly where the line falls.
Is it legal to listen in Indiana?
