Frequently asked questions
Is Suffolk County Police encrypted?
No. All seven precinct dispatch channels plus command and car-to-car are unencrypted. Only a small number of investigative channels are encrypted — the patrol traffic is open.
What about Nassau County?
Nassau runs a completely separate system and is not part of Suffolk’s. If you’re near the county line tell us and we’ll set expectations honestly rather than selling you a promise about the wrong county.
What kind of scanner do I need?
A P25 Phase II digital scanner. Suffolk runs a simulcast system, which cheaper scanners struggle with — this is a market where the right hardware genuinely matters, and we ship the right one.
Do I have to program it myself?
No. It arrives set up for your exact Suffolk County address.
Is it legal to listen in New York?
Yes, listening is legal. New York restricts scanner use in a vehicle for people with certain criminal convictions — for everyone else, at home or portable, it’s fine.
