What is changing — and what it means

Gallatin County and the City of Bozeman have both begun using the Montana Public Safety Communications System, the statewide P25 network. Four county interoperability channels and one Bozeman PD car-to-car channel are already on P25.

That is worth knowing, but it has not emptied the analog side. Routine dispatch — the traffic that actually tells you what is happening in your town — is still going out in the clear on VHF, exactly as it does in Missoula County. Yes. Bozeman PD Channel 1 dispatch and Channel 2 tactical are both analog FM and receivable on a hand-programmed scanner. One car-to-car channel has moved to P25, but routine dispatch has not.

Is the Gallatin County Sheriff encrypted?

No. The Sheriff's Law Enforcement North channel, the combined Law and Fire South channel, and the tactical channels are all analog FM and unencrypted.

Do I need a digital scanner in Bozeman?
