Charlotte Police Scanner

Hear What’s Happening Around Charlotte

Live CMPD division dispatch, Mecklenburg Sheriff, fire and EMS — on a scanner we set up for your address before it ships.

Yes — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police still dispatch in the clear, division by division. Steele Creek, University, Eastway, Freedom, North, Central, Hickory Grove, South and the rest all come through, along with the Sheriff, Charlotte Fire and Mecklenburg EMS — on a scanner we program for your exact address.

What you’ll be hearing

Your CMPD division

Charlotte is split into more than a dozen police divisions. Load only the wrong one and your neighbourhood sounds dead — so we load the ones that actually cover you.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff

Sheriff patrol channels plus the town departments — Matthews, Mint Hill, Huntersville and the university police.

Charlotte Fire & Medic

Fire and EMS dispatch on the county system, with a VHF simulcast that even a basic analog radio can pick up.

Storms and the I-77 corridor

Severe weather response, highway wrecks and the state VIPER traffic that ties Gaston, Cabarrus, Union and Iredell counties together.

We do the hard part for you

Nothing to program. Tell us your Charlotte address and we load the right divisions, the Sheriff, fire and EMS, and the neighbouring counties you commute through. It arrives listening to your side of town.

Not in Charlotte? We program a scanner for any U.S. address. Check your area free and see exactly what you can hear before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is CMPD encrypted?

No — division dispatch is unencrypted and receivable. SWAT, street crimes and the per-division tactical channels are encrypted, and during a small number of major incidents CMPD has moved patrol onto encrypted channels temporarily. Day to day, you hear the city.

Why does it matter which division I get?

Because Charlotte dispatches by division, not citywide. If your scanner only has divisions across town you’ll think it’s broken. We program the ones covering your address so it sounds busy from day one.

Do I have to program it myself?

No. It ships already set up for your exact Charlotte address.

Will I hear the fire department on a cheap scanner?

Charlotte and Mecklenburg fire dispatch is simulcast on VHF, so yes — fire is reachable even on entry-level gear. Police needs a digital scanner, which is what we send.

Is it legal to listen in North Carolina?

Yes, listening is legal. North Carolina, like every state, prohibits using a scanner in the commission of a crime.
