The Complete Police Scanner Handbook

Short answer: this is a written handbook, not a radio. It covers how scanning works in plain English, the three things that decide what you can hear in your county (analog, digital P25 and encryption), how to pick a first scanner, antenna placement, and the scanner codes you will hear on the air.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license to listen? No. Listening to unencrypted public-safety radio requires no FCC license.

Will a scanner work in my county? It depends on what your county broadcasts. Many counties still run analog on at least some channels; others have moved to digital P25 or encryption. Check your zip code free at policeradio.org before buying anything.
